About CYSM Sea Dragons
CYSM Sea Dragons is a Melbourne-based dragon boating team known for its friendly, inclusive culture and strong sense of community. We welcome people from all backgrounds who are interested in learning more about Chinese culture, improving fitness, and building teamwork through sport.
Our team first began competing in 1985 and has grown into a competitive club that trains hard while maintaining a fun and social atmosphere. Today, we regularly compete in local regattas as well as State and Australian Championships.

President Sue Phung
Meet Sue Phung (aka “Sue-P”), our club president.
At 4’9″ of pure pocket-rocket power, Sue has been leading from the front since joining the club in 2017. She captained from 2018/19 to 2020/21 before stepping into the President’s seat in 2022/23.
- A Level 4 Sweep, Sue’s represented Australia as:
Australian Dragon Boat Federation Aurora Premier drummer at the 2018 China Asian Championships - Aurora Senior A sweep at the 2023 Thailand World Championships
- Plus, multiple years with the Dragon Boat Victoria State team in both Premier and Senior A.
Off the water, Sue’s got a black belt in Taekwondo (10+ years, with 2–3 years coaching juniors), and a serious passion for food – Italian, Japanese, Thai, Middle Eastern… and especially ice cream!
Sue’s vision? To build a strong, competitive Women’s 20 She Dragons crew and hit the podium at the National Australian Dragon Boat Championships 🥇.
Eric Cham - Head Coach
Eric brings a wealth of dragon boat experience, having paddled for more than a decade. His very first dragon boat session was back in June 2015 with our club under the late Head Coach Joe Alia. Since then, his journey in the sport has progressed through club, state, and national levels.
Eric is also part of the Down Under Dogs (a touring dragon boat squad made up of paddlers from across Australia who compete internationally). He is the current divisional coach of the Dragon Boat Victoria Premier squad and has represented Australia on multiple campaigns as an Australian Dragon Boat Federation Aurora athlete.
Eric brings a unique breadth of experience to the club and the wider paddling community, and we’re excited about what’s ahead under his leadership.
📷 Fun fact about Eric: You may have seen him behind a camera, but did you know he owns more than 180 film cameras?
“Earn your marbles every day. Build your strength, find your joy, repeat.” – Eric
